Canal
A canal street unchanged in 800 years. Pingtan singing drifts out of the teahouses at dusk.
Echoes of Water · Pingjiang Road · Suzhou
The largest of Suzhou's classical gardens, laid out in 1509 and a UNESCO site, built around water so still it doubles every pavilion and willow. Its genius is borrowed scenery and framed views — moon gates and lattice windows that crop the landscape like paintings. Arrive at opening before tour flags fill the bridges; the eastern, central and western sections each have a different mood, with the central pond the showpiece.
Insider tip — Suzhou Museum (Pei-designed) is right next door - book the garden for opening, then walk over.
