Water Town
Stone bridges, lantern-lit boats, breakfast noodles by the water. Stay past the day-trippers.
Tongli Water Town · Suzhou
An 800-year-old canal street running parallel to a stone-banked waterway, lined with whitewashed Ming-Qing houses, teahouses and noodle shops. The soundtrack is Pingtan — soft Suzhou storytelling sung to a pipa — drifting from teahouses; pay for a short evening set in one. Walk the towpath, cross the humpback bridges, and eat your way along; it's loveliest lit up after dusk once the day crowds leave.
Insider tip — Sit at a canal-side teahouse for a live Suzhou pingtan set (pipa + sanxian, sung in Suzhou dialect); some run evening sessions to ~22:00.
