Tongli Water Town

Suzhou4.73 hr3.4k saved

A 1,000-year-old water town of 15 stone arch bridges and canal-side teahouses, 18km from Suzhou. The classic ritual is crossing the 'three bridges' — Taiping, Jili, Changqing — for luck, then touring Tuisi (Retreat & Reflection) Garden, a UNESCO miniature masterpiece. Day-trippers vanish by late afternoon; stay overnight for lantern-lit canals, dawn mist and a bowl of local noodles before the boats wake up.

Good to know

  • Best time — early morning — Early morning, or after ~16:00-17:00 once day-trippers leave; evening with lanterns on the canals is the magic hour.
  • Town always walkable; ticketed scenic spots/booths ~07:30-17:30 (Apr-Oct) / ~07:30-17:15 (Nov-Mar); night tour (Tuisi Garden only)
  • Cross all three lucky bridges in order
  • Don't skip Tuisi Garden
  • Overnight to lose the day crowds

Insider tip — Best access = Metro Line 4 to Tongli Station + Bus 725 (~1h total); stay overnight in a canal guesthouse for the quiet lantern-lit town the day-trippers never see.
