Great Wall · Mutianyu

Beijing5.04 hr12k saved

Mutianyu is the green, restored stretch 70km from the city, with 22 watchtowers and far fewer crowds than Badaling. Take the cable car up to Tower 14, hike east toward Towers 19–20 for the steep, dramatic ridge, then ride the 1,580m stainless-steel toboggan back down from near Tower 6. It's hands-down the better day trip — fully walled battlements, forested hills, and that absurd, joyful slide.

Good to know

  • Best time — early morning — Near opening to beat tour buses, lighter crowds, shorter cable-car/shuttle queues.
  • Peak (Mar 16-Nov 15) Mon-Fri 07:30-18:00, weekends 07:30-18:30; Off-peak (Nov 16-Mar 15) ~08:00-17:30.
  • Cable car up to Tower 14, toboggan down
  • Hike toward Tower 20 for the steep views
  • Wear grippy shoes — steps are uneven

Insider tip — Cable car UP, toboggan DOWN (toboggan closes in rain; from Jun 2026 over-60s may be barred). From Beijing easiest is private car/tour (~1.5h, ~65km); DIY is 916 Express f
