The Terracotta Army

Xi'an5.03 hr13k saved

Discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well, the army is some 8,000 life-size soldiers, horses and chariots sculpted to guard Qin Shi Huang — China's first emperor — into the afterlife. Three pits sit under aircraft-hangar roofs 35km east of the city; start with Pit 1, the vast main phalanx, then double back to the smaller Pit 3 (the command post) and the bronze chariots in the exhibition hall. Hire a guide or rent the audio set — bare, the rows of figures don't explain themselves. Every face was individually modelled; no two are the same.

Good to know

  • Book ahead. MANDATORY real-name TIMED ticket, reserve up to 7 days ahead; select 'Passport' as ID; bring the SAME passport (checked at multiple gates); adult 120
  • Best time — early morning — At 08:30 opening beats tour-bus waves and midday heat; Pit 1 fills by ~10:00.
  • Summer (Mar 16-Nov 15) 08:30-18:30 (last adm 17:00); Winter (Nov 16-Mar 15) 08:30-18:00 (last adm 16:30).
  • Start at Pit 1, save the bronze chariots for last
  • Audio guide or a real guide — context is everything
  • Tourist bus 5 (306) from Xi'an station, not a pricey taxi

Insider tip — Do Pits 2, 3 and the bronze chariot hall FIRST, then hit Pit 1 once groups thin; take the free shuttle to the Mausoleum/Lishan Garden that rushed visitors skip.
